Nutrition
Hi, I’m Kira, and I believe we all deserve to feel comfortable in our own skin and content in the life we create. I spent too much of my life searching for a way to feel like I was okay – acceptable, lovable. My childhood training taught me that “acceptable” women are thin and fit. They are quiet and don’t take up too much space. Experience revealed that I was accepted when my energy focused on meeting other’s needs, having very few of my own. Studying nutrition showed me how to not only create an “acceptable” me, but to serve others by also making them more “acceptable”. The deeper I got into this the less content I felt. Shaming myself and others into following specific lifestyle and eating patterns only seemed to make us all feel worse about ourselves. There had to be a better way…
Yoga Therapy
I turned to yoga in search of peace but instead found yet another space of body competition and judgement. My experience of the yoga community was vastly different from the experience I read about in books. I searched further and found the practice of Viniyoga, once called “The New Ugly Yoga”. I followed this path of deep spiritual work to certify as a yoga therapist, but remained feeling isolated as there was no clear path for me to share my newfound expertise on mind-body-spirit connection and autonomic nervous system regulation in the mainstream medical model I was steeped in.
Loss & Grief
As I navigated living in this seemingly bifurcated existence, my husband of 20 years chose to end his life rather than continue his lifelong struggle of cycling between depression and mania. The devastation in my life was absolute, but instead of disappearing into grief, I chose to begin a new way of living. My husband’s struggle to live and ultimately his choice to die has been my greatest teacher - particularly when it comes to the value of choosing a life that brings contentment. I would no longer participate in or propagate the idea of sacrificing one’s self to satisfy the narrative of others.
Ayurveda
From this new perspective, I studied Ayurvedic medicine (Ayurveda translates as “science of life”). Here I found a true integration of physical, mental, and spiritual health. I began to practice as a dietitian, yoga therapist, and ayurvedic health counselor, but continued to find myself wanting to go deeper with my clients. I could see that all the knowledge in the world about healthy lifestyle practices makes no difference if we haven’t addressed the wounds we carry that unconsciously drive our choices, behaviors, and ultimately our overall health.
Psychotherapy
Through my graduate school studies in psychotherapy, I came to understand most of the choices and behaviors we engage in are born from our need to feel safe, accepted, loved, and connected. The strategies we develop to get these needs met are learned from our families, peers, and culture and often dismiss who we are and what we really need. It is our work to get curious about what we do, why we do it, and whether or not it serves our authentic self. We must find productive strategies to get these needs met before we remove the old ones (food, substances, sex, hurtful relationships, etc…). From this space we can build in loving lifestyle practices that honor who we are and make us feel better, not worse.
You only treat yourself well when you feel worthy of being treated well. I am here because I have experienced this truth and hold the deepest confidence in each individual’s ability to feel worthy and to begin treating themselves with kindness, love, and acceptance.
When I’m not connecting with other humans in therapy, you can find me connecting with my canine friend in nature. We will likely be found on a hiking trail or on a (ideally warm) beach. I value adventure and learning about cultures outside of my own, so I spend a lot of time traveling with my husband and reading about other lives and experiences (fiction and non-fiction alike). Food is my love language and I greatly enjoy the creativity of cooking and sharing a meal with the people I love. I enjoy writing and dream of, one day, publishing a memoir about my experience of finding contentment…stay tuned!
